Last-Minute AP Exam Tips

As AP week is upon us, I’m going to share three last-minute tips to help you succeed.

1. Don’t Cram.

I wouldn’t recommend trying to relearn all the content the night before. If it’d make you feel better to look over some sticky subjects, then spend a minimal amount of time going over it. Otherwise, take that time to wind down and not think about the exam for a while. If you’re going to study anything, I recommend you study the exam structure. Know which portions are worth more and how much time you have on each section, so you are refreshed on what’s coming.

I find that when I cram, I get more confused than before during the exam because I will think I remember things I saw the night before, but I went over so much so quickly that I confuse facts and topics. The worst thing you can do is stay up late studying the night before, which brings me to the next point…

2. Get Rest and Eat Well.

You may be nervous the night before, but try your best to get at least 8 hours of sleep. Drink some decaf tea, turn the lights down, put the screens away, maybe read a non-academic book. Do some breathing or meditation, and get to sleep early.

The morning of the exam, be sure to eat a good breakfast that will keep you awake and alert. But, also bring snacks for the break so you can maintain your attention for the second half of the exam.

3. Positive Affirmations

There’s one thing I like to say to myself to calm me down and give me confidence before a big exam, and it goes something like this:

Alright. Here we are. At this point, I know what I know and all I have to do is show that I know it. I have studied this subject for about 9 months now. I’m an expert. I know what I’m doing. Now, I just have to show the graders I know what I’m doing. Let’s do this. I’ve got this.

You may think this little pep talk is a bit cheesy, but don’t underestimate the power of this affirmation. Remind yourself how much time and energy you’ve spent on the subject. You’re a freaking expert. Own it.

I’ll keep this one short because I know you all need to focus on getting ready for those exams. Best of luck, my friends. It’s almost over. ❤ Alicia
